A Cooper’s hawk in flight.

Cooper’s hawk in flight in British Columbia, Canada.

At first glance, you don’t know what to look for. Nature’s mimicry has done its work. Then the Cooper’s hawk appears, wings outstretched, flying in our direction.

I took the photo in a British Columbia park. The RAW file makes it possible to correct areas that are too light or really dark, but you still have to respect the bird’s ability to blend in with the landscape. By over-lightening the bird, we take it out of the environment where it hides to watch its prey.

The fact that the hawk is advancing rapidly towards the camera makes it difficult to focus, especially through high light contrasts. The result is a slight blurring of the head, which is easily corrected by artificial intelligence.

Several companies sell a product capable or claiming to be capable of correcting blurred areas. As far as I’m concerned, I use Topaz AI. All you have to do is position the cursor on the spot where a slight improvement is desired and you’re done.

However, don’t expect miracles with such software. The photo has to be good enough for the program to make a tiny improvement.

A vintage Cadillac in Victoria

The two pictures below show advertisements for cars that were found at the time in various magazines.

Old advertisement of a big american car

Old advertisement of a Pontiac Bonneville american car.

These old representations of a new car favored very bright colors to catch the reader’s eye and increase the chances of a sale. In the two photos above, red and orange are found on cars, buildings, dresses, faces, etc.

When I spotted this old Cadillac in 2018 in Victoria, British Columbia, the two previous photos came to mind. Again, several elements of the same red and orange colors are found in the photographic composition: the Cadillac, the motorcycle, the umbrellas, the post office box, the chairs and tables, and even part of the menu. It almost looks like an artificial set-up for an upcoming advertisement!

A view of Mount Robson in 2014 on our way to southern British Columbia, bound for Kamloops. We were fortunate to see enough of Mount Robson as there are more and more forest fires in the summer in western Canada and visibility is often reduced.

A picture of the Kelowna Yacht Club at dusk.

The Kelowna Yacht Club in British Columbia.
The Kelowna Yacht Club in British Columbia.

For this picture of the Kelowna Yacht Club, in British Columbia, I was more interested in capturing the general atmosphere rather than the whole yacht club with all its boats and installations.

The words Kelowna Yacht Club and the boats being  obvious in the midground, there was no need to add more details. It was nonetheless important to position the tent in the superior right corner of the picture since the name of the yacht club was showing and it was well lighted.

The photographic composition includes elements of the surrounding natural environment that made Kelowna’s reputation. The boats are framed between the rocks and the plants in the foreground while the mountains are visible in the background.

In order to achieve a good photo at this time of the day, a tripod was necessary. It was nonetheless mandatory to limit the exposure time due to the winds, in order to avoid a blurred picture. The shutter speed was limited to 3.2 seconds and the ISO adjusted to 320 to limit the photographic grain. An aperture set at 13 allowed a sufficient depth of field to offer a sharp image.

A Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens mounted on a full frame Canon 5DSR was used for the picture. The focal was limited to 32mm. The visibility was somewhat limited due to the active forest fires in the region, but the additional condensation nucleis in the air helped to obtain beautiful colors in the sky.

A summer evening near the Columbia River in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

A view of the Columbia river near Revelstoke, Alberta 2018.

While passing by Revelstoke, in British Columbia, walking along the pathways near Columbia River is a must. The surrounding mountains offer a very interesting view and the changing colors provide great photo opportunities.

In the picture above, I thought appropriate to add a touch of life by waiting for a duck to reach the center of the frame and by including the two bikes in the foreground.

Since I was not walking with a tripod, I adjusted the shutter speed to 1/250 and the ISO to 2000. The aperture was set to 9.0 and the exposure modified to + 1/3 to compensate for a bright background. The 50.6 megapixel RAW file allowed for further adjustments with Photoshop.

A Canon 5DSR full frame camera was used, coupled with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens. The chosen focal length was 70mm.

The picture above was taken with a Canon 14mm f2.8L lens. The Ford F-3 is parked in a winery in Kelowna, British Columbia. The truck in itself is interesting, but the background certainly adds a special touch that sends the viewer to a long gone era.

The MV Golden Princess in the Vancouver Harbour.

The Golden Princess cruise ship in the Vancouver Harbour in 2018.

The cruise ship Golden Princess  leaves the Vancouver Harbour while, in the background, a few rain showers help making the scenery even more interesting. The MV Golden Princess can carry 2592 passengers. It was built in Italy by the Fincantieri shipbuilding company.

I took the picture from the balcony of a condo tower’s thirty second floor with a Canon 5DSR equipped with a Canon 70-200m f2.8L IS II USM. The focal length was adjusted to 200mm but, as I was really far away, it was necessary to seriously crop the picture in order to enlarge the cruise ship even more.

Playing piano in Oak Bay, Victoria

A young girl plays piano on Willows Beach in Victoria.
A young girl plays piano on Willows Beach in Victoria.

The photo above was taken with a Canon 5DSR full-frame camera in Victoria, British-Columbia. The exact location is a beach in Oak Bay called Willows Beach.

In many cities around the world, the trend is to install used pianos in unusual places hoping that citizens and tourists will take a few minutes to try their hand at the instrument. While a young girl was starting to play on this piano left beside Willows Beach, a young boy appeared in my viewfinder, upside down on his father’s shoulder. To each his own.

In the distance, it is possible to see the sailboats of the Oak Bay Yacht Club and the Washington State Olympic Mountains, in the United States.

The Corona Frontier ship in the Vancouver harbour

The Corona Frontier bulk carrier vessel in the Vancouver Harbour in 2016

The picture above was taken during summer 2016 in the Vancouver harbour, in British Columbia. I chose that time of the day to take the picture since the light was at its best.

The calm winds allowed for a better reflection in the water. The rain, which had been falling almost all day, favored the presence of low clouds which eventually hid the mountains. It is nonetheless possible to still see part of the mountains at the top of the picture.

I used a Canon 5DSR full frame camera equipped with a Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II USM telephoto lens. The aperture was set at F9 in order to optimize the photo’s sharpness.

The bulk carrier ship in the foreground is the Corona Frontier. It sails under the japanese flag and has its home port in Kobe. The vessel was built in 2000. The Corona Frontier’s draught is 13.7 meters and its gross tonnage is 48032 tons.

Having fun on a beach in Parksville British Columbia

Children are playing on a beach in Parksville, British Columbia
Children are playing on a beach in Parksville, British Columbia

The children in the picture above immediately reminded me of my youth. In the ‘60s, video games had yet to be invented and we were often outside trying to create new situations in which we could take risks without serious consequences.

The kids are playing on a beach in Parksville, British Columbia. For how long will the boy be able to stay dry in his rubber boots? His sister seems to realize more than him the situation in which he has put himself. Maybe it is already too late to return to the beach before the next wave…!

The scene was caught with a Canon 5DSR full frame camera.
